Chicken is an excellent source of protein and dogs love meat so its the obvious combination to a successful diet. Protein is a nutrient made up of amino acids that are the building blocks for your dogs body. They are necessary in your dogs diet, since dogs, unlike humans, cannot synthesize all the amino acids they need and therefore must obtain them from food. It is responsible for the health and development of all tissues and organs in the body including cartilage, tendon, muscle, skin, hair and nails whilst also maintaining bone structure, blood proteins and antibodies. So to ensure this development is optimized we only use good quality protein to maximize the digestibility of the food and thus harness its nutritional quality as poor quality protein derived from cheap fillers are difficult for the dogs to digest.
Like fresh chicken poultry meal is an excellent source of protein. The meat meal used is a highly digestible calcium rich flour made from the meat, organs and bone of the animal that remain after elements have been removed for the HUMAN food industry. It does not include the head, feet feathers or any other undesirable parts of the animal.
The puppy recipe uses a low ash version of the same grade meat meal this is because it contains less bone and more flesh and therefore less calcium and ash. This enables better control of your puppies calcium intake which is important to ensure that they grow correctly, as too much calcuim may result in skeletal deformities.
Lamb is simply an alternative to the chicken recipe. As it is raw fresh meat it retains all the original goodness, and taste, you'd expect from a good joint of meat. As with chicken it is easy for the enzymes in your dog's stomach to break down the food thus maximizing the nutritional value of the food.
Brown rice has the added benefit of being more nutritious simply because it is less processed. After harvesting, the grains are run through a rice huller/husker for milling to remove the outer grain husks. After this process, you're left with brown rice. Nice and simple. To create white rice the germ and inner husk is removed and the grain is then polished. All the added processing means that white rice has far less Vitamin E, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin B6, Folacin, Potassium, Magnesium, Iron and over dozen other nutrients. Added to that, the dietary fibre contained in white rice is around a quarter of brown rice.
Oats are an excellent source of soluble and insoluble fibre. The soluble fibre being a good source for the friendly bacteria in the large intestine. It also slows the rate of food passage through the gut ensuring a preferential transit time of food, leading to maximum digestion and absorption of nutrients. The insoluble fibre helps the animal to feel satisfactorily full and provides a crunchy texture to the kibbles to aid oral hygiene. Fibre is important for maintaining normal gastrointestinal transit time.
As well as providing bulk and decreasing the transit time of faecal matter, therefore decreasing the risk of colon cancer and haemorrhoids, barley's dietary fibre also provides food for the "friendly" bacteria in the large intestine. When these helpful bacteria ferment barley's insoluble fibre, they produce a short-chain fatty acid called Butyric Acid, which serves as the primary fuel for the cells of the large intestine and helps maintain a healthy colon. These helpful bacteria also create two other short-chain fatty acids, Prop ionic and Acetic Acid, which are used as fuel by the cells of the liver to help lower blood cholesterol.
Beet pulp is a coomon ingredient used by most manafacturers of quality diets. Like oats it is an excellent source of soluble and insoluble fibre invaluable in helping the good bacteria in the gut to thrive and thus promote good digestive mobility. It also enables a texture to the kibble aiding oral care and hygiene.
Linseeds contain high levels of lignans (antioxidants) and omega 3 oils. Antioxidants are substances that may protect the body against the effects of free radicals, these are molecules produced when the body breaks down the food consumed. Free radicals can damage cells and may play a role in heart disease.
Salmon Oil has Vitamin D which regulates the calcium and phosphorus levels in the blood by promoting their absorption from food in the intestines. But crucially salmon is very rich in the DHA & EPA omega 3 fatty acids which stimulates blood circulation and thus promotes good cardiovascular activity. It is also believed this important oils increase the development of the brain and eyes.
Sunflower Oil is one of the best sources of the essential oil Vitamin E and is very high in linoleic acid making it an excellent source of the Omega 6 polyunsaturated fatty acid. These are essential for a good quality luxurious coat and to maintain healthy skin.
Ultima is a completely natural and healthy diet without any unnatural preservatives, colours or flavourings so in keeping so in order to complement this approach we have added various herbs. These are thyme, marjoram, sage, parsley and oregano all have which have significant benefits to the animal. Yucca extract is also added to help prevent body odours.
If you have ever wondered why your dog is eating grass or faeces it may be a sign of a vitamin deficiency, this should help to counteract this common problem.
Found in many veterinary diets prebiotics stimulate the growth or activity of bacteria in the digestive system and are beneficial to the of the animal. Both FOS (Fructo-oligosaccharides) and MOS (mono-oligosaccharides) encourage gastrointestinal health and performance.
Glucosamine hydrochloride is a compound that occurs naturally in the cartilage cushioning the joints and Chondroitin sulphate is a long chain carbohydrate derived from connective tissue. Given in additional amounts, chondroitin with glucosamine, it is believed to attract fluid back into joint cartilage, helping maintain the cartilage matrix and the onset of oestoartritis.
